Proud we can claim tiny part of Armstrong

I am not old enough to have witnessed the Moon landing and the role played by Neil Armstrong.

For me, it is a historic event - one that is truly momentous and of huge significance in our lives.

By all accounts, it was the skills and cool head of Neil Armstrong that saved the Apollo mission as they descended onto the Moon's surface.

He returned a hero and had all the attributes to become a world celebrity. However, he rejected the glare of publicity for life as a university professor.

His achievements set him out as an outstanding role model. His unassuming nature, his humility and his willingness to impart his knowledge and experience to students mark him out as exceptional human being.

Neil Armstrong has earned the world's respect and gratitude - and isn't it great that we can claim just a little bit of him, with his family's origins being in County Fermanagh?
