Rates hike is the lesser evil

Our Finance Minister is doing his best to restrict funding available to Northern Ireland Water in an effort to force the service to introduce efficiency savings, but even he acknowledges that additional funding will be required in the medium to long-term.

Our Water Service has always been funded from the rates, so why can't they be increased incrementally to fund the shortfall in future years?

Surely by placing a strict cap on the regional rate on the one hand and introducing separate water charges on the other is a wasteful exercise.

The millions of pounds spent setting up a new billing and payments system could be used as extra funding for water supplies if the existing Rates Collection Agency was used.

No one looks forward to paying increased rates, but - arguably - it is the lesser of two evils.
