I don't think I've seen such a misleading story for a long time. Highlighting almost 60% of motorists who have challenged parking ticket fines have won their cases and then equating this with red coats being 'ruthless', gives a false impression (News, May 9).
From the information provided, I have calculated that 118,569 tickets were issued across Northern Ireland last year. Of these, around 13% were challenged and, of those, 59% were appealed successfully. So 9,094 out of 118,569 were wrongly issued, that is to say, 92% of tickets were issued correctly.
