Republic has big call over border

When Brexit enthusiasts say that the common travel zone of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland existed before the entry of both to what is now the EU, and will continue to exist following a UK exit, they overlook the important difference between then and now.

The Republic at present, in the interest of keeping the common travel zone, is not part of the Schengen zone. Could it still remain so after a Brexit?
