Respect is crucial in marking the events of history

As an Ulster-Scot from Northern Ireland, now living in London, I write concerning the FAI decision to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Would the FAI, for instance, also be prepared to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme on July 1 this year, when so many Irishmen from both north and south — particularly those from the 36th Ulster Division — paid a heavy price on the first day of the battle?

On the island of Ireland, we are supposed to have a shared history. Is it not now time for Ireland/Northern Ireland to remember its republican and unionist history?

History, after all, is just a matter of perspective, in that neither is right or wrong.

Let us respect each other’s views on history, whether we agree or not.
