Ritchie's honesty speaks loudly

'nazareth! Can anything good come from there?' (Jn 1:45-46).

'Surely, you are one of them; for you are a Galilean and your speech shows it.' (Mt 26:73).

Cosmopolitan prejudice against people from the provinces is nothing new. Margaret Ritchie is blessed with a Co Down accent and admirable, but in politicians somewhat unique, qualities of being honest and earnest. For this, SDLP members chose her as party leader. Apparently, these qualities are not rated by some US Embassy staff (News, May 31).

From the Bible quotes, she can take comfort - and also from another old saying: 'Men have many faults: Poor women have but two; There's nothing good they say, And nothing right they do.'
