Sad irony of care home closure
ON September 7, the Nazareth Sisters in Bishop Street, Derry will close their doors for good. This is a sad day for the Diocese.
This religious order came to Derry in 1892 in the aftermath of the famine. Their purpose was to help relieve suffering.
In the years that followed, many people from meagre resources provided funds and the nuns gave generously of themselves. Eventually, the state provided funds.
It is ironic that the Sisters are leaving at this point in time, when the country is in the grip of recession – a time, once again, when their help and support is really needed. The area will be a lot poorer for their going.
