Hilton Cubit's clarion call (Write Back, May 2) for greater openness over political donations in Northern Ireland is laudable.
Having lived in Northern Ireland on and off for 50 years, I still think the political set-up - STV, Assembly etc - all very odd. Nowhere else in the UK would they tolerate such secrecy over political donations. My old Latin master at Stowe, PG Hunter, frequently quoted from the Satires of the Roman poet Juvenal, every time the subject of politics and elections arose, one of Juvenal's maxims being particularly relevant to the secrecy over political donations: "Quis custodiet ipsos custodies?" ("Who will guard the guards themselves?")
