Sinn Fein must ban the threat of fracking now

AT a public meeting hosted by Ban Fracking Fermanagh in Enniskillen, Sinn Fein MLA Phil Flanagan made a commitment that his party will block planning permission for hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – when it comes before the Assembly Executive.

His promise to the people of Fermanagh and other areas threatened with this dangerous method of shale gas extraction is to be welcomed.

But why delay? As we speak, the ground is being prepared for test drilling. If the Sinn Fein leadership were to publicly back Mr Flanagan's commitment today, the fracking multinationals would pack their bags and be gone tomorrow. I call on Martin McGuinness to take the threat of fracking – which is hanging over the heads of the people of Fermanagh – off the table today.
