Social media-inspired grief fest undignified

I hope that I will not be considered churlish for being ill-at-ease with much of the display of grief in Manchester.

This is a cultured, dignified, vigorous city, which has responded with decorum to many unhappy events in the past. It is sad to see, therefore, that a media circus has been created around this tragic event.

Many not involved have taken their heads away from mobile phones, hoping to become the centre of attention.

There is not a lot of dignity in creating mountains of rotting flowers, placing cuddly toys and letting off thousands of balloons - even receiving celebratory tattoos.During the worst of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, we would have rejected this sort of social media-inspired nonsense.
