Solidarity gives us some hope for the future

If there is to be any silver lining to the dark cloud of the killing of Constable Ronan Kerr in Omagh, it is the widespread revulsion expressed by all sides - especially by nationalists and GAA people in particular.

It is to be hoped that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and, if they are not, it is up to the governments north and south to ensure that the law is adequate to prevent the likes of this ever happening again.

No one was ever convicted of the other Omagh bombing of August 15, 1998. When people can flout the law of the land with impunity, then that is a failure of democracy.
