St Patrick may signal the way forward for us
FOR many years, it has been clear that Northern Ireland would need a new provincial emblem.
The solution is fairly simple: the Cross of St Patrick should be the basis, set against a white background; in the centre the Red Hand of Ulster, surrounded by a wreath of six flax flowers.
St Patrick is the patron saint of all, the Red Hand is accepted and used by all, in sport as well as politics, and the flax flower is the accepted new symbol of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
However, a simple, clean emblem, making a break with the past, but recognising where we all collectively belong, would be a sensible way forward.
