Taverners' ball is just not cricket

Hot on the heels of an extortionate rate settlement, the news that Lisburn City Council will pay £150 each to take 20 councillors to the Lords Taverners' Northern Ireland Waterloo Ball insults voters.

In a week when Lisburn city-centre suffered yet another shop closure, our city leaders should have focused on economic regeneration and how to get our city off its knees, but the council was instead organising a night out at the ratepayers' expense.

The one representative who comes out of this embarrassing episode with any credit is Councillor Crawford, who proposed that anyone going to the event should pay the cost themselves.
