The Bible shows that salvation can be lost
It is incorrect for the Rev D Howard Gilpin to claim that the Catholic understanding of justifying grace "means there is no assurance of salvation" (November 29).
Faithful Catholics have the same assurance of salvation as every other Christian through the infinite love and mercy of God.
That being said, the assurance of salvation, according to God's Word, is dependent upon human beings cooperation with the saving grace of God.
In the Sacred Scripture God warns "believers" - not pagans or the "unsaved"- of the consequences of their lives not coinciding with the faith they profess (eg Matthew 7:21).
Salvation is not a "done deal" at conversion but is dependent upon our continued walk with God in a life of love. "Whoever perseveres to the end will be saved", says the Lord (Matthew 24:13).
