The UUP's old guard cost the party seats
It has been fascinating to watch power struggles unfold within the UUP over the last 50-odd years. There are a couple of observations worth making.
Firstly, the 10 current UUP MLAs are, almost without exception, Mike's team - selected and elected under his stewardship.
Secondly, one could argue that it was largely the old guard, who chose to eschew nationalist transfers in favour of voting down the unionist slate, who were swept aside by the electorate.
If they had followed Mike's lead at the time, one wonders whether nationalist transfer might have returned a few more UUP MLAs to Stormont.
