Time to give HMS Caroline a lick of paint
I WAS driving down Queens Road in Belfast's Titanic Quarter the other day and noticed that HMS Caroline is starting to look a bit shabby, her once pristine grey paint now streaked with rust.
Of course this coming year is the year of the Titanic, and all eyes will be focused on the new Titanic exhibition building and the Nomadic, but Caroline has been a part of Belfast's maritime heritage for almost as long. Until recently she was the Royal Navy's second oldest ship in commission, after HMS Victory, and the oldest still afloat. As such it would be an absolute disgrace to allow her to fall into a state of decay.
Would it be beyond the resources of the Navy to at least give the old girl a coat of paint and have her looking her best in a year when there will be so much worldwide interest in Belfast's proud connection with ships and the sea?
