Translink must do more to justify rises
Translink fares increased as of yesterday. Yesterday morning, I paid the new train fare of £40 for a weekly return from Coleraine to Londonderry/Derry. That is up £2.50 (from the £37.50 fare last week); an increase of 6.66%.
Translink had announced that the average fare rise would be 3%. At the time of the last increase (July 2010), the headline average figure was quoted as 4%, but the fare for weekly travel from Coleraine to Derry was increased by 7%.
So yesterday was the second time (at least) in a row that the most dilapidated part of the network is hit by a large increase in fares.
I wouldn't mind paying the fare increase if only Derry had the same level of service that Cullybackey enjoys, or if the first train that arrived into Derry was timed to allow me to get to work for 9am.
