TV licence can be needed for iPlayer viewing

A RECENT article (Comment, January 9) implied that a TV licence is not required to watch the BBC iPlayer.

We would like to make it clear that, if you are watching or recording programmes at the same time as they are being shown on TV via the iPlayer, you do need to be covered by a valid licence.

Only if you are watching, or downloading, programmes that have already been broadcast is a licence not required.

The regulations are made clear with a pop-up message to anyone watching 'live' programmes on the iPlayer.
