Tweed and the Orange Order

I read with interest the article by Chris Kilpatrick, 'Orangemen expel sex beast Tweed' (New November 30).

An Orange Order spokesman is quoted as saying: "Mr [David] Tweed's conviction automatically terminates his membership."

May I point out that, according to the present rules of the Orange Order, it certainly does not.

Given that no jail term has yet been imposed and he has not yet been ordered to sign the Sex Offender's Register, the comment pre-empts the court's decision.

However, under the previous rules, a criminal conviction carried a mandatory sanction of expulsion. These rules were kept in the breach.
