Underground cable is safer

The decision by the Environment Minister to refer the North–South interconnector to a public inquiry is a welcome development.

In the Republic, Eirgrid was forced to withdraw its application for the southern leg of this project after their application was torn apart by scientific experts.

Compelling evidence of the deleterious health effects of high voltage overhead cables was presented and Professor Noack of Germany, gave evidence that undergrounding high voltage cables is more economically viable over the lifetime of the project.
