Unionists must not agree to a poll on border

Your correspondent Lyle Cubitt (Write Back, January 16) is wrong to agree with Old Bailey bomber Gerry Kelly.

A border referendum will not settle the matter, nor will it be productive, as it will merely trigger an even more restrictive 'countdown' clock, as once a referendum is held a referendum has to be held once every seven years.

So, how is this at all productive or conducive to delivering peace and stability? It will only set off an even larger sectarian time-bomb with a shorter fuse.

Mr Kelly just needs to look at the latest census figures from 2011. Some 59% of the population hold a British passport and those who deem themselves Irish have diminished, with more people calling themselves Northern Irish.
