Unionists must work together
As we enter the New Year, I hope that talk around the subject of unionist unity will finally bear some fruit.
Talks between the UUP and DUP on Belfast City Council demonstrated a degree of good sense that, hopefully, will deliver political benefits.
These are encouraging signs for those who are in favour of a united unionist approach.
It doesn't need to involve party mergers.
For too long we have witnessed unionism being bypassed and ignored by the SDLP, Sinn Fein and the Alliance Party, leading to a gradual eradication of unionist traditions and culture.
The DUP has long proposed the idea of unionists working together, or at the very least an electoral pact that would see key seats being returned to unionism.
Now is the time for the Ulster Unionist Party to step up to the plate and consider the potential of at least a working-together arrangement.
