Wall of silence over George Best mural

Having read in the Telegraph about the George Best mural disgracefully being painted over I am still confused as to why this was done.

If the people who commissioned a mural of a tree were that anxious to have it painted why did they paint it over George Best? Could they not have painted the tree somewhere else or is this the only wall in the whole of east Belfast?
