Well, I've done it. I've sent my hard-earned £60 and my licence for three points, because I'm a soft target.
After a driving lifetime of not being in Wacky Races, I've been zapped doing 37 in a 30 zone of five lanes while being swept along with the racers from the green light.
I felt that I would be at risk if driving at 30, while others were pressing on, given the clear road conditions. No school, no hospital or pedestrian crossing; no pedestrians anywhere in sight, no danger, no history of accidents (fatal or otherwise).
But there was the sneaky van with the camera watching through the back door, picking off the soft targets.
So, what about the motorbikes with no front number plate required, powering their way along the roads, ignoring speed limits with total impunity?
Our road was recently upgraded to dual carriageway and every evening it's easy to hear the noisy-exhaust petrolheads and motorbikes convert this stretch into a race track - again with no regard to speed limits - and not a sneaky camera van in sight.
Soft targets beware. It's £60 a time for being a sensible driver. So, who am I? I'm a mature driver of 52 years' fine-free and accident-free driving all over Europe, incensed by the nabbing of soft targets at wide-open locations while others speed with no regard for limits.
