Younger voters need incentives
YOUNG people are not entirely disillusioned with politics here. In February, 7,000 11-to-18-year-olds from across Northern Ireland voted in online elections for the UK Youth Parliament and the first ever NI Youth Congress. These initiatives encourage young people to get involved in politics.
However, when the average age of an MLA is 52, it is no surprise that there is a trend of declining voter turnout among 18-to-24-year-olds.
If our politicians continue to be seen as distant and not interacting with young people, then dissatisfaction could grow further.
