Battle over cuts commences

By Tom Moseley

The first big battle of 2013 takes place in the Commons today, as the Government faces down Labour over benefit cuts.

The Government is putting the 1% rise (below inflation, so a real-terms cut) to the vote and both sides are confident of winning.

The Tories plan to paint Labour as soft on welfare scroungers, while the Opposition will claim that most of those affected are, in fact, in work.
