Reminder of fate of festive puppies

London Notebook, by Tony Grew

Parliament's seasonal break begins today. Northern Ireland MPs have joined forces to remind us that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas.

"Thirty-four per cent of children will ask for a puppy this Christmas," according to a Commons motion, signed by Mark Durkan and Jim Shannon, while 112,000 stray and abandoned dogs were taken in last year.

The MPs hope that "one day, all dogs are cared for by responsible owners and have a home for life".
