The day before Christmas is the really special one for me

By Eddie McIlwaine

My favourite day of the festive season has always been Christmas Eve.

December 25 with its religious content is special of course.

But  the air of expectancy on the Eve is hard to beat.

There is a magic in the air.

Christmas Eve became my favourite when I was  small and hanging up my stocking — and it has been like that for children everywhere. As a teenager I was a part-time postman at Christmas when December 24 and 25 were mail delivery days.

And on Christmas Eve day there was  always a present or two along the way as the cards were opened.

Not so many presents on Christmas Day — householders were too busy preparing the dinner when the post arrived.
