A political marriage usually means two parties deciding to form a pact for mutual electoral advantage. It is a marriage of convenience which does not necessarily involve any affection for each other.
However, that was not the case yesterday when the children of two experienced and well known Northern Ireland politicians decided to tie the knot. Philip Kennedy, son of the chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party and formerly a long-serving MLA Danny Kennedy, married Laura, daughter of the new leader of the DUP, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, who before his defection to the biggest unionist party had been a long-time colleague of Mr Kennedy.
But this is not a time for political analysis but rather an occasion of celebration for two families whose children had fallen in love and decided to form a lifelong alliance.
In keeping with the joyous atmosphere it is fitting that we and our readers wish the happy couple every happiness as they set out on their life together. It is an act of union which causes no controversy.
