Anne's battle for her Down's daughter truly inspirational

In her searingly candid interview in this newspaper, Anne Donaghy tells how she could not bear to look at her baby daughter, born with Down's Syndrome, for five days after the birth. She was not prepared for the shock or what to do or where to look for help and careless, hurtful comments from others only added to her despair.

Gradually Anne came to terms with her daughter's condition and fought to get her the required therapies for her complex needs and access to mainstream education. A survey found a child with Down's is a boon to a family, bringing happiness and a more positive attitude to siblings. As Anne says, a world without Down's would be a poorer place.
