It’s the gift that keeps on giving — and when it’s given to a baby girl, not a year old, it makes it all the more precious. Last year, parents Ashleigh and David Cowan from Belfast were praying for a Christmas miracle for their 10-month-old daughter Ellie.
On December 22, they got that call they were hoping for, and a year on, little Ellie is thriving following a successful liver transplant.
Today they tell their story or hope and despair through her illnesses and the ultimate joy of her recovery (pages 15/16). “It was the greatest Christmas gift we have ever received,” said Ashleigh.
Only a family that has been through the panic of having a child seriously ill in hospital can understand the effect it has on parents’ lives.
For Ashleigh and David, this Christmas will be a very special one. For Ellie, there will be many more special ones in years to come.
If ever there’s a little girl who deserves a spoiling from Santa on Christmas morning, it’s surely her.
