Celebrated tree a reminder of advances in healthcare
There could not have been a more fitting winner of Northern Ireland's Tree of the Year competition.
It was planted more than 50 years ago in the grounds of Belfast City Hospital by Greek doctor, Dr Dimitrios Oreopoulos, who had spent time at Queen's University and the hospital before going on to find worldwide fame for a novel form of dialysis.
The tree grew from the seeds of a tree descended from one under which the father of medicine, Hippocrates, taught in 500BC. That is a wonderful linkage which makes the tree so special and a permanent reminder of the developments in therapies and procedures which save so many lives.
