Eileen Weir's life - like that of many of her generation - could have taken a very wrong turn when she was still a teenager and, briefly, a member of the UDA. But instead of turning to paramilitary crimes, Eileen realised her future lay in peace-building. Working with women's groups in the Shankill area of Belfast, she made sure their voices were heard and also reached out beyond her own community. She is one of those too often unsung heroes and heroines who work tirelessly and ceaselessly to make Northern Ireland a more inclusive society.

It is fitting that she has been given a prestigious community relations award in recognition of her sterling work.
