Educational underachievement, especially among working-class Protestant boys, has been a long-standing and intractable problem in Northern Ireland. Less than half of those pupils entitled to free school meals left school with GCSE grades A* to C compared to 80% of those from more affluent backgrounds.

Education Minister Peter Weir's setting up of an expert panel to examine ways of tackling the problem is welcome, and shows a determination at Stormont to address a shameful blight on our much lauded education system.

Every child deserves the best possible opportunities in what is an increasingly competitive world.
