The scene of the blast

The public's response following the devastating explosion which caused more than 200 deaths in Beirut and razed large areas of the city to the ground stands in stark contrast to the inaction of the Lebanese government which has been forced to resign en masse by the angry population.

A Northern Ireland woman living in the city tells us today how ordinary people have rallied round to help each other and it is telling that foreign aid has not been directed through the corrupt authorities.

It is essential there is a concerted international relief programme otherwise this volatile country could descend into chaos, adding to the Middle East's problems.
