Sometimes being hailed as a heroine doesn’t mean a lot - but sometimes, as in the case of 14-year-old Armagh girl Lucy Montgomery, it’s the least a person deserves.
The Royal School, Armagh pupil has been awarded a Royal Humane Society Testimonial on Vellum and personally praised by the Secretary of the Society for her heroism when what should have been a fun day paddle-boarding on summer holiday in France almost turned into disaster.
But when a young boy got into difficulties in the river and was in danger of being swept away, and her own father, a non-swimmer who had been trying to help, also found his life in danger, brave Lucy kept her cool when others may have panicked.
Pulling the 8-year-oldf boy, a family friend, from the current, she then also rescued her father who had been swept off his feet by the force of the river.
