Making a place for yourself in the bar business in Belfast is never an easy task, and making that name in the USA — well, you can imagine the competition.

But just like the finest pint of Guinness, the cream has risen to the top, and that cream is the product of the Emerald Isle.

It may have taken 20 years of hard graft, learning the trade and turning all Tom Cruise (1988 style), learning the cocktail trade first as he gave it a shot and chased his own American dream — and now they’ll be raising a glass to Michael McIlroy in New York after the bar he owns with business partner Sam Ross was named the best in North America.

And in the best Cheers tradition, it’s a place where everybody knows your name — there are only 28 seats in Attaboy in New York’s Lower East Side — with the pair saving tips over eight years to fulfil their shared dream. In the Big Apple it appears that size doesn’t matter after all, the quality does.

If he can’t throw a cracker party to celebrate, then no-one can!
