If the Real IRA terrorists who bombed Omagh had carried out the attack just four months earlier, they would be entitled to avail of the statute of limitations currently being proposed by the Secretary of State — and get off scot-free.

The August 1998 atrocity, which killed 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, falls just outside Brandon Lewis’s arbitrary cut-off date for the ending of all Troubles-era investigations — a move he seems to believe will encourage victims to “draw a line under the past”.
