Rory McIlroy's support for kids' respite centre is admirable

Those who think Rory McIlroy is a typical one-dimensional sports superstar will have to eat their words when they read his interview in this newspaper today. He speaks eloquently about the need for more facilities like Daisy Lodge, the respite centre near Newcastle which his foundation has supported to the tune of £1m.

For someone of his global appeal raising the money is the easy part, but raising awareness about the need for such facilities is much more difficult. He is genuinely touched by the work of the centre, and like many young people in this province today, is much wiser and more concerned about really important issues such as health or education than the confrontation which so often passes for debate here.

Keep up the good work, Rory.
