Belfast City Council has been proactive in promoting the city as a place to visit and to do business in and has met with considerable success in its efforts.
But its decision to spend many thousands of pounds on designing a new logo for the city has raised many eyebrows. Is this an effective way of spending ratepayer's money? The design, far from striking, fails to convey the true spirit of the city.
It is the cost - as high as £50,000 - which is most surprising. A designer on this newspaper rustled up arguably equally effective signage in his tea break. There is no doubting the council's intent to make Belfast attractive, just the way it is doing it.
