Sean McLaughlin is a very lucky man. He was taking part in a charity boxing match but ended up fighting for his life when he suffered a heart attack. He owes his survival to the heroic efforts of first aiders from the Order of Malta and, particularly, off-duty cardiac nurse Roisin Dorrian. She used a portable defibrillator - a device invented in the province - to help revive the stricken man in the ring.
urses are often referred to as angels and Roisin certainly proved to be Sean's guardian angel. What this incident shows is the need for trained medical personnel and the appropriate equipment to be available at large scale events, as tragedy can often strike when least expected. Thankfully, in this case, a potential death was averted.
