There may be many reasons why someone can no longer look after an animal.
But none of those reasons is enough to simply abandon them on the roadside.
There are plenty of options, plenty of people, charities, animal rescue centres who will be willing to help rather than see an animal discarded in a ditch.
It’s even harder to stomach when the animals thrown away are only a couple of weeks old.
A few weeks ago it was a litter of puppies, today it’s two baby goats, umbilical cords still attached.
In time, thanks to the USPCA, these two kids will find a home of their own. They are safe enough away from those who would dump them so cruelly.
But how many more unwanted animals suffer a similar along Northern Ireland’s roadsides? We’ll probably never know. They’re left to die and that is what they do.
Those who keep animals and are willing to leave them to die in such circumstances should never be permitted to keep them again.
