An insight into being a business manager at McDonald's

North Belfast’s local economy has received a welcome boost with the announcement of over 90 new jobs at the new McDonald’s restaurant on the Shore Road earlier this year.

The restaurant which is a new design concept, opened in February and offers a host of new consumer innovations that deliver not only an even quicker service, but an enhanced customer experience. Customers can not only avail of table service and digital innovations, such as touch screen kiosks, but the restaurant also boasts of entertainment for the kids with, free to use tablets, a new digital play offering and an outside play place, the first in Northern Ireland


The restaurant operates from 6am until 12pm; can seat 106 customers and features a new dual lane drive thru, which can accommodate in the region of 150 cars per hour. The restaurant, located along the Shore Road brings McDonald’s portfolio in Northern Ireland to 29 restaurants.

Business Manager Katie McManus gives us an insight into her role:


Give a brief outline of your career to date:

I started working in McDonald’s Glengormley as a Crew Member in 2010. After I finished my A-Level’s I decided to go full time and worked my way up to 2nd Assistant Manager. In 2014 I moved to the Westwood McDonald’s restaurant where I was later promoted to 1st Assistant Manager. In February this year I opened the new McDonald’s Restaurant on Shore Road in my new position of Business Manager.

Is this what you always wanted to do?

No, I originally wanted to go to University and study Mental Health nursing. I began working in McDonald’s part-time whilst completing my A-Levels in school. I found McDonald’s really interesting and thoroughly enjoyed my job. As I progressed through all the different levels in McDonald’s I got a hunger to learn more about McDonald’s as a business and the career progression that was available. From that point on it was always a personal target for me to one day become a Business Manager and run my own restaurant.

What does a typical day entail?

My typical day usually starts around 10am during the weekdays. I spend an hour in the morning checking all results from the day before; giving feedback and communicating with my team; catching up on emails and compiling my to do list for the day. I spend a lot of my time coaching my management team whilst developing them and crew members in the restaurant.

My role in the restaurant is diverse and I have responsibility for all aspects of the business – including Food and Restaurant safety, Scheduling, Business Planning, Financial management as well as community and customer engagement. The weekends are usually different as I spend little time doing office work as I like to be out with my team on the floor making sure I’m coaching them to deliver the best customer experience possible. No two days are the same in McDonald’s - we have different challenges and successes every day and this is what makes my job so rewarding.

What are the best and most challenging aspects of the job?

For me the best part of my job is working with all the young people that we employ. I enjoy developing and coaching them through their positions in the restaurant. I thoroughly enjoy recruitment and working within the community as I enjoy meeting people from all different aspects of life.

What advice would you give anyone looking to follow a similar career path?

My advice would be to learn to be patient, learn to step back and analyse yourself and your management style as well as be open to adapting and changing to new environments. I think going into a business is a great career path to choose and looking back when I was in school we weren’t given many options on what career path we wanted to choose. I would advise anyone thinking about their future career to be open to learning new things and put yourself out there.

If you weren’t doing this what would you like to do?

If I wasn’t a Business Manager I would like to work with different businesses to help them develop and improve as a company giving them fresh ideas and new styles of management to try. I’ve always enjoyed helping and developing people as well as brainstorming and coming up with new ideas.

Describe your ideal day off:

My ideal day off would have to be gym, coffee date and clothes shopping. I’m always at my best when I’m out searching the shops for a bargain!
