Located in southern Italy, the Sorrento Peninsula is a must-see destination which combines the breath-taking views over the Bay of Naples, atmospheric villages and a unique landscape of hills and valleys, scattered with lemon orchards and olive groves.
From the historic cobbled streets and friendly faces of Sorrento’s old town to the stunning Isle of Capri, a holiday here is a feast for the senses. Whether you are a history buff who wants to explore the historic ruins of Pompeii or you want to take it easy with a glass of local tipple Limoncello at a beauty spot on the Amalfi Coast, there is something to appeal to everyone.
The romantic Isle of Capri
Accessed by hydrofoil, the island of Capri has long enchanted visitors with its clear blue waters, magnificent villas, famous occupants, designer shops and beautiful views. Whether you choose to enjoy lunch at one of the many bars and restaurants, swim in the sea or take a stroll through Augustus Gardens, there are plenty of ways to relax and recharge on Capri. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Blue Grotto, a sea cave on the island’s coast which is so-called as it is illuminated in blue by light reflecting from the crystal clear seawater.
Historic Sorrento town
Sorrento is a friendly, historic town where you can set the pace. Pick up a souvenir in one of the many wonderful shops, sample the local gelato or enjoy one of the many pavement cafes or restaurants.
Piazza Tasso is the hub of Sorrento town, whilst the town’s historic quarter radiates from Via San Cesareo. Step into the shade and visit the peaceful cloisters of San Francesco, the Correale Museum or the Duomo. Make time to see the Palazzo Correale, an 18th-century mansion and the Basilica of St. Antonino (the town’s patron saint).
Marina Grande is Sorrento’s fishing village – perfect for a swim or a seafood lunch!
The amazing Amalfi Coast
One of Europe’s most scenic routes, a tour of the Amalfi Coast will take you along winding cliff-side roads through pastel-coloured villages such as picture-perfect Positano and sea-side Amalfi. Travel into the hills full of lemon groves, to the village of Ravello where you can visit the stunning Villa Rufolo and take in the amazing views.
The historic ruins of Pompeii
Lying in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii is an ancient Roman town which was destroyed by the volcano’s eruption in 79AD. The town was lost for 1,500 years under the heavy layers of volcanic ash until it was rediscovered in 1599 by archaeologists who found that the lack of air of moisture had preserved many incredible landmarks and even some of the people who tragically lost their lives.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Pompeii is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations and with good reason! See the city’s complex water system, visit its gymnasium and let your tour guide share with you the amazing stories of the 11,000 people who lived there.
Visitors to Pompeii should have a good level of fitness as the ground is uneven. This will be particularly important if they decide to do a further excursion to Mount Vesuvius.
A taste of Italy
The Sorrento area is a hotspot for foodies. Naples is the home of pizza and there is even evidence that this Italian classic was enjoyed in Pompeii, where street stands, bakeries and pizza-making equipment were discovered in the ancient ruins. Delicious seafood also features on local menus, with risotto and pasta dishes well worth trying. The Campania region excels in producing wines, both white and red, and most meals will conclude with a cold glass of Limoncello, a local lemon liqueur. Many a holiday-goer will find that the smell of lemons will long remind them of their amazing trip. Be sure to check out the gelato – the Italians are famous for the ice-cream and you’ll experience flavours that you never have before!
What’s the weather like?
With a climate that is warm and sunny in Spring and Autumn, Sorrento in July and August is hot and dry.
