Rio Olympics 400m hurdler Thomas Barr produced a storming finish to clinch second place in his heat at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.
The Ferrybank 27-year-old clocked 49.41 seconds, his third fastest time this year, which will give him confidence going into today's semi-final.
The heat was won by all-conquering Christian Warholm of Norway in 48.66 seconds.
Leevale's Michelle Finn, meanwhile, always faced an uphill battle to progress in the women's steeplechase and finished ninth in a solid 9.47.44.
The 29-year-old had only been ranked 12th fastest in her heat, with just the top three guaranteed to qualify. It was won by world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya in 9.18.01.
European 800m bronze medallist Mark English will launch his bid today. The Letterkenny man will be disappointed if he fails to make tomorrow's semis.
Finn Valley's Brendan Boyce goes in the final of the 50k walk in the early hours of Monday.
