Hunter Bishop has been given the green light to join up with the Belfast Giants, but he won't make it in time for tomorrow night's season opener when they begin their defence of the Challenge Cup at the Dundee Stars.

The 31-year-old was named as the final piece in coach Adam Keefe's jigsaw for the 2018-19 season two weeks ago, but he has remained in the USA while the rest of the team have been preparing for the new season in Belfast.

He has now had his UK work visa approved and the club has begun the process of getting him to the UK as quickly as possible.

Bishop is expected to make his debut for the Giants when they play their first home match of the season next Friday, which is also against Dundee, and will then be in action again 24 hours later when Glasgow Clan come to the SSE Arena.

Also missing for the Giants this weekend will be captain Blair Riley. He picked up an injury during pre-season preparations, but his absence is expected to be short-term.
