Burnett in line for European glory shot as Hearn plays waiting game

Promoter Eddie Hearn says he is seriously looking at lining up Ryan Burnett for a shot at European bantamweight champion Karim Guerfi.

Unbeaten Belfast man Burnett chalked up a routine victory over Spanish-based Mexican Joseafat Reyes in Hull on Saturday night, 79-73, controlling the eight rounds from start to finish.

British bantamweight champion Burnett would love to have a world title shot but Hearn seems to feel that a European title shot makes more sense before going on to the biggest stage.

"It's a waiting game for Ryan and he's disciplined enough to wait for his chance. The European title fight is one we're pursuing, we've also made offers to Lee Haskins the IBF World bantamweight champion," said Hearn.

"This was a treading water fight… it was important that he stays active. He has the ability, in my opinion, to move up the weights. He's a bantamweight at the moment, but could go up to super-bantam and who knows, even featherweight.

"He really does have that star quality and working with his trainer Adam Booth; I really feel he has the talent to go all the way to the top."

Meanwhile, in Dublin's National Stadium on Saturday night, Derry light middleweight Connor Coyle chalked up his third straight win with a points victory over Nicaraguan Miguel Aguilar over four rounds.
