Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz set for July New York City title blockbuster

By David Kelly

Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz look to be on course to clash at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York at the end of July.

According to reports in the States, the mouthwatering bout for Santa Cruz’s WBA World featherweight title is being lined up for July 30.

Cyclone Promotions refused to comment on the speculation but it would seem that the last Saturday in July is favoured for a battle that will be screened live coast to coast across the States on top cable channel Showtime.

Top American boxing powerbroker Al Haymon, who will be staging the show, has yet to comment but it is understood that details should be rubber-stamped before the end of the week.

The Barclays Centre has become a popular venue for Haymon, who has staged many top fights in the 19,000-capacity arena.

Frampton will be aiming to become the first Northern Ireland boxer to win World titles at two different weights having unified the IBF and WBA belts at super-bantamweight with his victory over Scott Quigg in Manchester.

The blockbuster show is also expected to see Limerick’s former WBO World champion Andy Lee tangling with Danny Jacobs for the WBA World middleweight title.
