Conlan out to lead Ulster bid for seven titles

Michael Conlan has his sights on securing a hat-trick of titles at the Irish Elite championships in Dublin's National Stadium tonight – as well as hoping for seven out of seven for Ulster men.

Flyweight Conlan will be joined by Sean McComb (lightweight), TJ Waite (light-fly), Tommy McCarthy (heavy), Jason Quigley (middle), Willie McLaughlin (welter) and Gary McKenna (bantam) in the search for glory this evening.

First defending champion Conlan must focus on Chris Phelan ahead of flying out to the States to hook up with his American team in the World Series of Boxing.

Olympic bronze medallist Conlan said: "I'm not taking anything for granted. Of course I'm confident having beaten him before but I'm sure he'll make it tough for me.

"But it would be very special to make it a hat-trick of Irish titles, not many have that record.

"It could be a big night for Ulster boxers because there are seven of us in the finals and everybody has a real chance."

Cairn Lodge lad TJ Waite will be bidding to keep the light-flyweight title in Belfast, following in the footsteps of Paddy Barnes who has dominated the decision for the best part of a decade.

"TJ has a great chance, I think he'll have the style to beat Hughie," added Conlan.

Joe Ward is confident of completing his own treble when he faces Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan for a third time in the light-heavy decider.

Egan, meanwhile, is proud to be fighting in his 13th straight elite final – a record run which started on February 23, 2001.

"To still be there after this length of time is fantastic," he said.

Olympic champion Katie Taylor faces Poland's Karolina Graczyk.
