Record million dollar purse for Taylor if fight gets green light
Katie Taylor will scoop the first million dollar purse in women's professional boxing if her long-mooted clash against Amanda Serrano goes ahead this spring.
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has reiterated his ambition of securing a top of the bill showdown between Taylor and seven-weight World champion Serrano in New York's Madison Square Garden in April.
Sources have confirmed the Bray fighter would gross the first ever seven-figure purse in women's boxing if the clash gets the green light.
But it remains to be seen whether Serrano - who is due to take part in an MMA fight in her native Puerto Rico later this month - will accept the challenge.
While she has signed a contract to fight Taylor and has repeatedly stated she is interested in challenging the undisputed lightweight world champion, there is scepticism in boxing circles as to whether she will ever get into the ring to face the Bray pugilist.
But the ever pragmatic Hearn, who once said that the way to tie down a fighter is to make them a financial offer they cannot refuse, is pressing ahead with tentative plans for a Taylor v Serrano clash in April.
Serrano would probably gross in the region of $250,000 for a showdown against the Bray fighter who would be putting her WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO lightweight world belts on the line.
Financially this would represent a windfall for Serrano whose biggest career pay check was 10,000 dollars until she signed a three fight deal with Matchroom last year.
At the moment there are three Saturday nights: April 11, 18 and 25 available in Madison Square Garden for the clash which would be shown live on the DAZN network in the United States on SKY in the UK and Ireland.
